Program begins with a participatory movement experience, led by Jeanne Limmer,  and continues with a site-based presentation at Cathedral Ledge. accompanied by Brian Charles on didgeridoo! Movers wanted! No experience necessary.

Forest Songs and Stories

An informal, drop-in singalong and chance to make simple instruments from natural and recycled materials.


Write a short story, draw a picture or bring a photo that expresses your response to the White Mountains.

 NH PleinAir Painters & other artists will paint around the region throughout the day and bring their work to the informatio center to show and sell from 3 to 4 pm

Family Hike with the White Mountain National Forest:


We're happy to partner with the White Mountain National Forest to present a series of nature-and-art hikes and walks each weekend of the Festival, led by Forest Service personnel and focusing on forest education and on the connections between the forest, scenery, and culture. We invite visitors and community members to join us on these free hikes and walks. As groups may be limited in size, preregistration (323-7302, info@aannh.org) is appreciated but not required.

Lovequist Loop:
  Meet at 1030 am at Rocky Gorge, about 8 miles from Conway on the Kancamagus Highway (Rte 112). This 1 mile, easy loop provides access to Falls Pond. The trail is suitable for families with children of all ages.

Guide: Marianne Leberman, Recreation and Wilderness Program Leader on the White Mountain National Forest. Marianne will introduce kids (young and old) to the Junior Ranger program, talk about what is a National Forest and get you on the way to becoming a Junior Ranger by completing a few pages in the booklet.

The day's programming is entirely free!
The daylong program includes morning talks by authors Eric Pinder and Pavel Cenkl. Throughout the day, books will be offered for sale and for signing by the presenting authors. The event will close with the Writers’ Project’s signature fiction competition, Literary Flash. At 1 p.m. George Geers discusses “the state of writing in New Hampshire,” and at 1:30 pm, editor Kay Morgan discusses Beyond the Notches: Stories of Place in New Hampshire’s North Country. At 2:30 p.m.,Writers’ Project program director Carla Gericke discusses the Literary Flash form, and the Literary Flash competition begins at 3 p.m. Register at

This year's juried exposition features works by more than 40 artists presenting sculpture, glass and wood arts, ceramics, fiber arts, fine arts and jewelry for sale at all price points. There will be live musical performances throughout the weekend, including local favorite “Calico Slim.” Food and refreshments include lobster sandwiches and a "make your own sundae" area for the kid in each of us...
Join in on the arts and crafts activities for children, including sand sculpting, beading, temporary tattoos and t-shirt decorating.

Dick Fortin, Forester and Historian will talk about the history and tools of the logging industry in the White Mountains.


Not in Mt. Washington Valley, But Part of Our Festival:

Cultivate! A Three-Day Dance Festival.
Bethlehem, New Hampshire comes alive with dance as award-winning dance artists and musicians from the region and beyond
(NH, ME, VT, MA, NY, PA, IN, IA, WV, and AZ) gather in Bethlehem for a weekend of workshops, performances,
discussions and social events. Created by Katherine Ferrier, Cultivate is a grass-roots effort, intended to nourish and
support community by creating a space for contemporary dance to take root, develop and flourish. Dance workshops
for all levels, from complete beginners through advanced dancers will be taught by some of the most sought after
teachers in the country, and held on the beautiful campus of the White Mountain School. Classes include Yoga, Improvisation, Contact, Latin-inspired Modern, Release Technique and No-fuss Ballet, as well as a class for kids, and a special workshop for elementary school teachers who want to incorporate dance and movement exercises in the classroom.

Other Great Weeks Programs

Weeks Act Legacy Trail Field Trip, 9 am to 3 pm
Meet at Artists Bluff parking lot on rte 18, Franconia, 9 am
This free field trip will introduce participants to a few of the stops along the driving route of the new Weeks Act Legacy Trail in the White Mountain National Forest. Upon completing the field trip, visitors will be able to download trail information onto their smart phones or iPad devices or print out maps with their home computer.

Weeks Act and Water Sheds Talk and Hike

An illustrated talk  by local art historian Bob Cottrell about White Mountain artists who painted in the Conway area, followed by a car-caravan to visit some of the sites where they painted. Follow in the footsteps of the greats!

"Painting Shifts" -- a talk and slide show with White Mountain National Forest Artist in Residence James Kao, 4:30 pm
James Kao is the pioneer WMNF/Arts Alliance Artist in Residence. He'll talk about his work as well as major influences on the development of his artistic practice. James is a Chicago-based painter and teaches in the Painting/Drawing department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Following James' talk, artists are invited to stay and talk and to share and discuss their work.

Led by Forest Society docents Dave and Tanya Tellman, “Logging Life” will include photographs, old tools, a wonderful oral history, and logging songs from 100 years ago. The Tellmans are excellent stewards of their own land and will lead the audience into the past with their knowledge of the New Hampshire woods and logging industry.
